Deep in the Autumnal garden our eyes did spy a creature so magnificent we shed a single tear of joy.

Such an exquisite creature! Our breath was stolen from our very lungs.

And lo! It held in its arms a miniscule companion... a friend or perhaps a little lover.

Un petit amoureux!

They knew not that they were watched, so completely absorbed in each others tender gaze they were.

We shall leave them there, insulating themselves from Autumns chill beneath a blanket of affection.

We've really changed...

On February 7, 2008, Softlife brought you the first glimpse of the hidden realm of creatures. From that day forward we have diligently investigated the creatures of this world and beyond and have faithfully reported our findings to you on an almost daily basis. It has been our pain and pleasure to do so. Times, however, have changed. In these turbulent days of economic collapse, we have been forced to moonlight, beg, borrow, and maybe even steal to make ends meet, all of which takes time and a grudging effort on our part. We are filled with regret and sadness, but the fact remains: we have been forced to scale back our investigations to one measly creature exposé a week until the winds of prosperity once again blow the sweat from our weary brow and we can devote ourselves full time to our true calling. Here's to happier times, may they be swift and sweet.

Sometimes several cold ones are needed to get the solutions flowing. It looks like this is one of those times... but what's the big problem?

Oh, we should have known! This poor hellion is having real trouble coming up with the perfect Halloween costume, no trifling matter to be sure. Halloween is much like fashion week for monsters, the competition is fierce and the pressure is enormous. What's a poor uninspired beast to do?

Wait a minute, it looks like our little beast has an idea!

Polly is getting ready for her favorite holiday, which happens to be Halloween. She has been decorating her home all day.

Her mind now begins to turn towards the most important part of this fantastic holiday... the costume! What shall she be this year? This is no small matter, and Polly must summon all her creative powers in order to dream up the perfect costume.

She sits before her supplies and calls out to the Halloween muse with her mind.

At last the muse has spoken, and Polly knows just how to proceed. She grabs her scissors and gets down to business!

Oh boy! This is going to be good!

She slips on the final product...

And voila! Polly is transformed into a frightfully hideous beast!

It is perfection.

limp-beaked creature is up to anyway, shall we?

Shhh, we musn't let him know we are observing him.

It looks as though he is about to gorge himself on the cornucopia of autumns bounty, if we are not mistaken.

We were most certainly not mistaken... this poor creature now appears to be fuller than the moon on a full moon night... fuller than a glass that is half empty... fuller than the Oxford English Dictionary. He is plenty full, see?

And thus the creature slips away into the womb of the forest, where he will dream restless dreams until he is awakened by the siren hunger once again.

We have devoted ourselves tirelessly to the often hazardous task of investigating the secret hidden lives of creatures of every persuasion. We have climbed to the mountain tops, we have crawled on our bellies through the putrid mud, we have scoured the urine soaked alleyways, we have held our breath for minutes at a time as we scooted across the the ocean floor. We are exhausted. We are fatigued. We have other things to do. Still, we will continue to carry on, for your sake and the sake of countless others like you.

Salvetory is setting out to seek his fortune.

He has realized that he will not get far without a vehicle, after all this is real life and not some antiquated fairytale.

Salvetory is on a strict budget, so he heads straight for the used car lot in search of a good deal.

The salesman is eager to make his acquaintance. Salvetory is a bit puzzled by the ball and chain that is attached to the salesman's leg, but he keeps his thoughts to himself.

" Here is a perfect getaway ...I mean pleasure van! It is perfect for a long journey into the great unknown."
This salesman certainly has perfected his pitch!

Salvetory loves the comfort of the van, but he is a very practical fellow. The price of gas is just too high right now, so he is going to need a much more efficient ride.

This little coup is certainly economy sized, and it is also recycled!

On closer inspection Salvetory decides the coup is too tinny for the long journey ahead.

Hmmm...

Salvetory thinks not.

Ah...

Nope!

The salesman has one last vehicle to show Salvetory. It's a bit of a long shot, but it can't hurt to try...

Salvetory likes it!

We watch in amazement as the pod gathers to confer...

They reach a quick consensus and hop aboard.

As they speed off in search of further adventures, we find that we are not so sorry to see them go.

Unlike this exuberant group of beans, Softlife is very tired today. We have tracked the bean pod all through the night as they rambled through the city. Apparently Street Walking Beans are nocturnal, a fact we were sadly unaware of when we foolishly pledged to track them for you. You live and you learn.

We are, however, staunch professionals and we soldier on much like the pod who is back in formation and on the move again.

The fountain seems to be their destination. Perhaps they fancy a dip...

Indeed they do!

Street Walking Beans are highly skilled at the dead mans float.

After all that floating and drifting about, the pod climbs out of the water and proceeds to warm itself in the sun. They appear to be completely relaxed.

Not ones to rest for long, the beans are back in formation with poor Softlife dragging behind as stealthily as we can. We see a pile of leaves in the distance... could this be their destination?

Oh thank heaven! It looks to us like they are readying themselves for a nap at long last!

We do believe we'll join them.

A new strain of legume has been running wild through the streets as of late. The common Street Walking Bean is anything but common, it is highly intelligent, highly adventurous, and very agile.

These beans walk the streets in herds, or "pods" in a single file formation and are the very picture of confident nonchalance.

As they play among the struggling fauna of the city, we are able to get a closer look at these feisty legumes.

Softlife is thrilled by this new discovery and will dedicate the next few days to tracking this particular pod. We will unlock the secrets of the beans and post our findings here. Stay tuned!

Well, it looks like you spotted me! I was trying to camouflage myself within the stacks. You see, I am a bookworm, and many book owners really do not want me loitering among their stacks. It's pure discrimination.

I have been spending quite a bit of time in this particular stack. There is some good stuff here, although it is a little rich for my taste...

I have even done a little reading in my time here!

Anyway, I now feel it is time to move on to greener pastures. Yes sir, it is time for a change of pace!

Having satisfied his lust for the soft supple pages of the tawdry dime store novels that beckoned to him like wicked pastries from the bookshelves and nightstands of the home of his unsuspecting host, the savagely handsome bookworm became aware of a new desire burning deep within his firm and fertile loins.

Sometimes there is nothing better than curling up with a good book.

Everywhere we look creatures are busy staking claim to their cold weather hovels. We at Softlife cannot resist the urge to show you a few more of these ingenious hidey- holes.

This little guy has chosen a shelter with an Asian flair. Perhaps he plans on meditating those winter blues away!

This attractive creature takes a DIY approach to the shelter problem. She is going green by using found materials to build her hovel, which is not at all the same thing as stealing.

Here is a comfy creature who has taken the easy road. He just cosies up under a log and calls it a day! We sure hope this hovel provides sufficient shelter on those cold winter nights...

This wraith is snug as a bug in the closet!

This resourceful band of creatures have cleverly camouflaged themselves among an abundance of sustaining resources. They wont go hungry this winter!

And the twins are heading back into the heating ducts for a long winters nap!

Summer is almost over. Creatures everywhere are preparing nests, dens, burrows, and hideaways in which to shelter themselves comfortably during the dark, cold days that lie just around the bend of Autumn. Please take a moment with us to contemplate just a few of these humble creature hovels.

There are creatures hiding in the hayloft...

There are creatures moving into precarious shelters amongst the rubble of our cities...

Some creatures bed down in the trash can...

Some prefer the translucent silence of a winter under glass...

Some creatures do not hide away at all, but instead prefer to sit out in the open, enjoying the bitter briskness of old man winters caress...

Many creatures simply burrow into the dirt and wait in dormancy for the arrival of spring...

Others take a counterintuitive approach and winter over in the freezers of suburban homes...

Some creatures hibernate in the fireplace, which is just not safe, in our opinion...

And some clever creatures head for the dry sunny desert, where they can enjoy the winter in comfortable comfort!

We found a beautiful little emerald turtle today on our morning constitution. It was lounging peacefully in a sheltering bog in a seeming state of edenic bliss.

Being the dedicated scientific professionals that we are, we quickly found a sharp stick and prodded the little guy out into the open.

This is how we do it at Softlife. We use each and every tool available to us to scrutinize the creatures around us. Then we carefully document our findings and report back to you, our faithful disciples.

The inconvenienced reptile fled from our probing gaze...

and into a new refuge. It seemed to be leering at us from the safety of its sanctuary, which frankly, we found very rude!

Ah, the twilight days of summer. It is paramount that one gets out of the house and makes the most of these last few golden days.

For this little sportsman that means fishing!

Easy does it with that hook, buddy.

A quick assessment of the aquatic conditions assures our little friend here that he has picked an ideal spot. Let's hope the fish are hungry!

Fishing requires a sly sort of patience. Our fine fishing man sits back and waits for a bite.

The first catch of the day is unexpectedly furry...

The sportsman is not sure what to make of this one, although it is a big and beefy specimen, which can only be a good thing.

Back to the depths!

What the heck is this?

Bewilderment is quickly becoming the theme of this expedition.

Our hero is shaken but bravely presses on. He is determined to catch an actual fish before the day is done.

This is most definitely not a fish!

Ladies and gentleman, you see before you a disoriented, befuddled, and slightly unbalanced fellow. Will he throw in the proverbial towel and head home fishless and defeated? Will he make the most of it and dine on these strange beasts of the lake, hoping they prove succulent and tender in spite of their fearful appearance? Or will he gather his patience around him like a cloak and continue to fish, hoping the effort will reward him after all? Stay tuned...

A beautiful late summer day. In fact it is Labor Day, and this creature is at his leisure.

How sweet it is to take in natures bountiful beauty before the chill winds of Autumn bring with them the inevitable decline.

Ah, pastoral splendor!

But what is this? A carcass litters the sward! Is this part of the natural order of things, or could it be foul play?

Further investigation is required.

It seems that the tragic demise of this poor rat is a veritable windfall for these wasps, providing them with food and possibly even shelter.

We have spotted yet another strange bedraggled creature. This one was making an heroic attempt at camouflaging itself among the ornamental grasses, but it was no match for Softlife's eagle eye. We lost no time and roused it with a sharp stick in order to obtain a better look. You are very welcome.

Here you can see it positioning itself for an incredibly swift breaststroke across the sidewalk and into a new hideout. We have never, in all our years of scrutinizing the creatures of this sweet earth, seen anything like it.

They had better find something constructive to do soon, because it looks like some puppy tension is building...

The sweater is clearly dismayed at this turn of events.

All this aggressive play is beginning to wear the puppies out, not to mention the poor ambushed sweater!

Here comes a fashion forward female! She is sporting a punk-matron look, which manages to be both retro and ultra modern at the same time.

Big hair is very big right now on the street. People of all walks of life are wearing their hair enormous, and in a variety of electrifying colors.

Even the invertebrates have caught on to the huge hair trend!

This young waif has chosen a subtle, romantic interpretation of the fad.

Her pastel windswept up-do brings to mind a hip urban Cathrine searching the city's streets for her Heathcliff.

The monster came without warning. It came as Indian legend had said it would come, in the night and while a storm raged. It brought terror and horror to the peaceful tundra, transforming a frigid paradise into a panic-stricken, fear-blanched hell.

The monsters icy claws reached into every home, every church, school and supermarket. No one could escape its blood thirsty savagery.

What would it take to to satisfy the monsters mad lust?

The work of an actor is very emotionally and psychologically challenging, which is one reason the pay is so good. In some cultures actors are treated like real celebrities.

My little friend here is also an actor. In this film he is portraying the role of a severed head. The nuances of this character came very naturally to him, due to the fact that he is, in fact, a severed head. Sometimes an actor gets lucky and lands a role that seems to be made just for him.

This Tomato Hound is foraging for her meal of choice... tomatoes! These are hard times for the Tomato Hound. Due to changing weather patterns, the growing conditions for Solanum Lycopericum have been less than ideal. We at Softlife lie awake, tossing and turning through these lonely summer nights consumed with a growing concern for the plight of these gentle herbavours.

Today our scarlet friend is in luck. She has succeded in sniffing out a solitary green tomato, not the most sucluent specimen, but certainly amply edible.

She gives it a thorough going over before consuming it...

It is sour, but good enough to eat! Today the Tomato Hound is triumphant and will not go hungry. Tomorrow, however, is any ones guess.

We at Softlife have decided to make bird watching our focus du jour. We feel the need for a meditative, peaceful research endeavor. A little R&R is in order.

This morning we spotted an Angora Bellied Love Bird. Let's zoom in for a closer look.

Here we can see it about to take flight...

The primary food source of this particular species of Love Bird is the tiny insects that feed on decaying forest debris.

Oh the web of life!

We were quite surprised to find that the nest of this particular Angora Belly was not in the forest canopy as we had assumed, but under the porch of a run down house. This seems to us to be a vulnerable hideaway for a bird, but obviously we still have much to learn about this small avian.

This is a rare bird, so we count ourselves among the very fortunate to witness this seldom seen little fellow as he searched out a nesting site for the evening. Prurient, licentious, nefarious deviants one and all, this band of ruinous degenerates descend on the innocent narcoleptic.

And is quickly overwhelmed by his aggressors.

Once the victim is successfully restrained, the miscreants begin to argue amongst themselves. What is their objective?

Ah, of course. Greed poisons the heart and mangles the mind. It is wealth and power that impels this trio into malevolence.

A sickening sight, to be sure.

And what of the poor hapless bear?

The three scoundrels abscond into the underbrush with the spoils of their delinquency. Today justice will not be served.

Howdy! I am here in my wardrobe getting dressed for a big date. I have been working hard reeling this one in for a long time and I do believe she's finally hooked!

And yes, my heart is on my sleeve.

What I really need to complete my outfit is a dashing derby...

Hmmm.. too reminiscent of Huck Finn for this particular occasion.

Big Pimpin'! It's good, but maybe a little too good, if you know what I mean.

I most certainly do not dig the elderly vibe of this chapeau.

Heartbreak is a cruel master. When a great love is lost the light turns to darkness and peace becomes a distant memory. These are the times that try a creatures soul. Poor bunny, will she ever be free of despair?

Little does she know, she is not alone.

The devilish one is watching. The desperation of the poor bunny has an intoxicating aroma, like a fine wine, that beckons to the cloven fiend, drawing him out of the shadows.

He approaches her, feigning friendly concern.

"How sad, how tragic." he sympathizes, " What good is your lovely pink soul to you now that your heart is wounded? It is only causing you pain. Give it to me, and I will shelter it until a brighter day dawns for you, as it surely will."

The bunny recoils at this suggestion.Give up her soul? The very idea chills her to the bone.

The devilish one is undeterred.He draws in close and whispers something in her ear, something sinister... something seductive.

Just like that, her soul is his.

The fiendish trickster allows himself one brief jig for victory before absconding into the shadows with his fleshy treasure.

The devil may care... and then again he may not.

Here on Sweater Mountain they stake their claim and munch to their hearts content.

but these small disputes are quickly settled. They share because they care.

This elegant creature and her grub are enjoying a peaceful afternoon nature hike.

Little do they know, they are not alone. A hungry Plumentis has been stalking them for some time now and is about to move in for the kill.

The famished fiend creeps closer...

And closer...

Until at last he overwhelms the elegant young lady completely! The grub cowers in the underbrush, helpless to defend her.

But wait, the horrible Plumentis is not devouring the little creature, but is instead moving on to the grub! What will become of these poor unfortunate victims? Is this their sorry destiny, to be massacred by by a hideous insect while taking their afternoon constitution? Could this really be the end?

Tune in tomorrow for the answer to this and other questions which may come to you over the course of the long tense night that surely awaits us all.

The vile and heinous Plumentis has rendered the elegant young lady unconscious and is stealing away with the grub. We can only assume the Plumentis is taking the grub to it's lair where it can gorge itself in private.

Happily the elegant young creature appears to be recovering from her terrible shock and although still somewhat disoriented, she is taking stock of the appalling circumstances that have befallen her. Slowly but surely she hatches a plan.

She uses mental telepathy to summon an ally. This elegant creature has friends in high places... super friends.

Mothra!

The elegant creature briefs Mothra on the particulars of the situation, and together they hatch a plan to save to poor grub. Let's hope it is not too late!

It is not long before they spot the fiendish Plumentis and the poor wretched grub, who is alive but not really kicking.

A fearsome battle ensues...

After much violence, the elegant creature succeeds in overwhelming the Plumentis. Victory is sweet indeed! Grub in hand, our fine heroine mounts the trusty Mothra and the trio ascend heavenward towards a peaceful night and a better tomorrow.

We must tolerate these creatures and resist the urge to slaughter them. So now witness, if you will, the application of our ideals as we respectfully observe the proclivity of one such creature, no matter how vile it appears to us nor how violated we feel by it's uninvited presence in our environment.
